Description:
PENDING.Here is an imported Civil War rifle you do not see very much. It is a French / Belgian Pondir Short Rifle. This model is described on page 109 of "Firearms from Europe", a great refernce book outlining many of the firearms imported for the Civil War. This one has the added allure of being one assinged to the State of New Jersey. This rifle is specifically mentioned on page 181 of "European Arms in the Civil War". The rifle measures 49" with a 33+" barrel. There is a saber  bayonet lug at the front of the barrel with a number stamped on it. So somewhere there is a saber bayonet with the same number on it matching it to this rifle. The bore looks to be about a .62 with distinct rifling present. The stock is in very good condition with handling dings commensurate with age. Both sling swivels are present but the one attached to the trigger guard is frozen. The only marking other than the number on the lug are the remainder of the cartouche circles for the New Jersey stamp. The letters NJ in cursive letters is not visible on the breech, only the oval. The stock stamp is barely legible. The long range ladder sight is present. The ramrod is a replacement. The iron hardware shows uniform corrosion/roughness from I assume less  than favorable storage conditions. The muzzle area under the barrel shows the worst of it with some scattered pocking. The action works in that the hammer holds on 2 cocks and falls when the trigger is squeezed. It is what it is  -- a very affordable example of a somewhat rare Civil War rifle with association to the State of New Jersey. I have over 100 +++ feedbacks on under the same ID, WRG, but I am fed up with their high commissions and tax collecting and other associated fees. I will only post my antique firearms on GI from now on. Shipping will be actual cost inc. insurance via US Priority Mail.
