The serial number is SP14048 which makes it the 48th gun of 653 produced in the 1969 serial number range according to both Bigger Hammer and the Colt Archives serial Number look up page. This is generally attributed to the Tet Offensive and Colts moving the majority of it's AR builders to the Military assembly line. 1970 is recorded as the lowest Production year, however in all of the years that Both Perry and I have spent researching the SP1 neither of us have either encountered one or communicated with anyone who has encountered one Between 15001 and 15473. Therefore there is some skepticism whether any were actually built in this range. The rifle is in near excellent condition with light scattered wear and minor scuffing that one might expect on a 53 year old rifle. I find it's over all appearence very pleasing and although I have only observed several rifles in this Serial Number Range it is significantly cleaner than any other that I have observed. It retains 100% of the correct Parts for it's Serial number range and what little wear the rifle exibits all parts appear to be matching in finish and wear so I believe it to be 100% original The stock and Handguards have a shiny finish while the pistol frip is mottled. The gas tube has the early (type 1 ) bend which was modified in 1971 The Bolt Carrier has F/A notches (type 4) with no firing pin relief cut or "C" Stamping. The Bolt is "MP " marked and the firing pin a flat back head. It has a Type 2 Swaged Buffer tube with wrench cuts and Rear drain hole. It also has an Edgewater Buffer. The fire control group is correct with a closed back trigger and type 2 short disconnector, The hammer is the last of the rounded front with no markings. It has a type 2 mag catch. The upper reciever has no markings other than colt Variable proof mark and windage arrows. The Barrel has the letter "C" stampedd about 2" behind the 3 prong flash hider and "MP" Between the sight rivets. The sling is Type 1 with a Buckle. This Rifle would be a very nice example of a Low Production year for any Advanced AR15 Collection. As an add I will include a Signed copy of our third Printing of "A collectors Guid to the Colt AR15 SP1 sporter rifle which is now up to 160 pages and if the buyer wishes I will righ the reciept for the gun in the book. Some day this might add a little to the value SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Rifle Caliber: .223 Remington Manufacturer: Colt Model: AR15 SP1 Serial Number: SP14048 Barrel Length: 20 Condition: near excellent Metal Condition: 96% Bore Condition: Excellent Finish: Gray Park Manufacture Date: 1969 Item Location: AZ |
