P. Clabrough & Bros. was a gunmaker in Birmingham, England in the period 1871-1937. There were actually two firms. The first, J. P. Clabrough, began as a firearms and sporting goods retailer in San Francisco, CA in 1857 and operated until 1967. It became J.P. Clabrough and Bro. in 1871, and Clabrough, Goulcher and Co. in 1883, when William Golcher, a Minnesota gunsmith, bought into the business.This is a hand crafted J.P. Clabrough & Bros double barrel side by side break over shotgun. The very fine chisel engraved high quality piece is marked on either side of the receiver, "J.P. Clabrough & Bros England" and on the barrel rib, "J.P. Clabrough & Bros London Laminated Steel." The piece has a Damascus steel barrels measuring 30" ” chambered in 12 gauge for the 2 9/16" ong black powder shell, and the bores are clean with minor corrosion nearer the breech. the hammers are matched and work well and the gun locks up tight like a drum.The receiver is chisel engraved with detailed finely bank note accents. The walnut foregrip is hand checkered and has a side wedge for an early gun, as well as the pistol grip stock is hand checkered.. The shotgun has standard English proof marks on the underside of the barrel and receiver. The steel buttpad has the has traces of colorcase hardening. .Chokes are right IC and left IC. The fine English walnutstock has a LOP of 14 1/2". A very fine English hammer double is excellent condition. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL.When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith before shooting.
