Large Frame Revolver, Possibly One-of-a-Kind!
Here we present a Serial Number 3 Single Action Revolver. Though we have no idea of the maker or date made of this revolver, it resembles the Colts Bisley revolvers in ergonomics. Historically, prototypes such as this one was designed for military or commercial use which never entered general service. Guns in factory collections tend to stay in the factory. When one does come up for sale, it may represent a rare opportunity to own a true piece of firearms history.
It could show either an evolutionary step in the design of a classic firearm or a huge misstep by a marketing department in guessing what might tickle the consumer’s fancy. So, what is the value of history? Prototypes have ranged from small amounts to well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. We’ve listed this as “C&R” because we don’t know when it was made. Looking at the style, it was likely made in the beginning of the 20th Century, when the Colt Bisley, as well as the original Single Action Army was in its prime and firearms manufacturing was booming.
The bore measures approximately .265 caliber at the muzzle. The cylinder is 1.845 inches in length. The chambers measure about .325 at the rear and .282 at the front. The knurled, round knob above the hammer is an ejector rod that can be unthreaded and used to poke out shells via the loading gate. The hammer has a half-cock for administrative purposes as well as full-cock. The barrel is round with a Smith & Wesson-like barrel rib into which rifle-esque sights were installed into dovetails. The rear of the cylinder is knurled. The grip frame is very upright, optimized for target shooting, like the Bisley. The revolver overall is hand-fit and finished by case-hardening of the frame. Strong traces of blue remain on the barrel. There are no other perceptible markings on this piece other than the numbers “3” on the frame, trigger guard, and grip frame. This revolver demonstrates the maker’s high level of competence as the fit and finish is excellent. The nicely figured grips are the cherry on top!
The overall condition is very good+. The action is strong and tight. The bore is bright throughout. This example is serial numbered “3” on the frame, trigger guard, and butt. There are no other markings. Both hardwood grips remain firm with expected handling wear. Here is a head turner that will surely be a conversation starter, or a centerpiece of some good ole fashioned storytelling!
