Description:
Serial #77585, .22 RF, 3 3/16" barrel with a very good bore that has some mild pitting towards the breech. The barrel and frame of this handsome little revolver retain about 92-95% original nickel finish with some flaking to the underlying brown metal, and general fading to gray-brown at the muzzle, and along the heel of the butt. The cylinder has flaked to a deep gray-brown patina with some scattered pinprick pitting, while the hammer and ejector are a smoky gray color. Extensive, expertly done New York-style scrollwork and punch-dot engraving graces the sides of the frame. The sides of the barrel have geometric patterns flanked by scrollwork, and the barrel address and patent dates remain crisp. The smooth antique ivory replacement grips remain in fine shape with mellow age toning, and are pencil-numbered to the gun on the interior. The other parts have matching assembly numbers (“P 7"), and the barrel-to-frame fit has some lateral play, while the action is fully functional. The revolver is housed in an added, period case that is in very good condition with an added varnish on the exterior, a few light scratches along the lid, and other minor handling marks. The interior is lined in black baize that has light scuffs and edge wear. The revolver is accompanied by a 2021-dated S&W Historical Foundation Factory Letter that lists a shipping date of August 28, 1872, to a Mr. William Patton of Springfield, MA. William Patton was a successful Springfield businessman, and partnered with C.L. Loomis to build the Patton & Loomis Block; a commercial building in downtown Springfield that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Patton was one of the city’s wealthiest men when he died in 1898. The letter confirms the factory engraving, but states that the original grips were mother-of-pearl. This is a fine example of a very nice No. 1 S&W, with excellent period engraving, and connected to a prominent Springfield businessman. Antique
