Butt plate tang dated 1804 and lock plate with early rocker style “SPRINGFIELD” stamp to the rear of the hammer and Type I “EAGLE/US” stamp forward of hammer. All original as altered to carbine probably for use during the early part of the Civil War by Confederate forces. A very typical Confederate alteration showing considerable age with the forend bearing close similarity to carbine altered Model 1842 Percussion Muskets done by the Richmond Armory. It is important to note that many of the arms used during the the first year of the war were flintlocks with nearly 60,000 in the armories of Virginia alone in early 1861. Nice all original otherwise and with lovely original metal patina and the original stock finish. Lock in working order. Old ramrod with brass tip. SOLD Antique: Yes |
