Description:
Antique DWM ARGENTINE CONTRACT Model 1891 Bolt Action 7.65mm MAUSER Rifle

Late 19th Century Mauser Export to ARGENTINA!

Here we present an antique DWM Argentine Contract Model 1891 Bolt Action Mauser Rifle made by Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken circa 1897 in Berlin, Germany. This example is one of the many “export” rifles made for foreign governments, all based on the Mauser Model 1889.

After the Mauser brothers finished work on the Model 71/84 for Germany in 1880, the design team focused their efforts on creating a small caliber repeating rifle that used smokeless powder. Because of setbacks brought on by Wilhelm Mauser's death, they failed to have the design completed by 1882, and the German Rifle Test Commission, or the Gewehr-Prüfungskommission was formed. The commission preferred to create their own design, which was what would become the Gewehr 1888, often called the "Commission Rifle".

In 1886, the Argentine Small Arms Commission contacted Mauser to replace their own Model 1871s. Since they wished to keep retraining of their armed forces to a minimum, they went for the Mauser Model 1891. As with other early Mausers, most such arms were made by the Ludwig Loewe company, who in 1896 joined with other manufactures to form Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken, more commonly referred to as DWM.

One of the defining features of the Argentine Mauser was its thin sheet steel jacket surrounding the barrel. This was a rather unusual element not common to any other Mauser mark of note. The jacket was instituted as a feature intended to maintain the effectiveness of the barrel and the solid wooden body over time, otherwise lengthening its service life and long-term accuracy when exposed to excessive firing and battlefield abuse.

Like almost all of the Argentine Mausers we have seen, this one has had the Argentine Crest removed from above the chamber.

The overall condition is fine. Strong action. Bright bore. Original finish preserved.  This example sports an excellent stock with less than average wear. Numbers match (with the exception of the bayonet). Sharp and legible markings. Nice modern leather sling.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 29 inches.

Caliber: 7.65mm Argentine

Overall condition as seen in photos.
