Description:
The Marlin Model 39A is one of Marlin’s most well-known lever-action rifles. It was originally introduced in 1939 and was a development of the original Model 39. The example shown here is a standard model with the longer 24-inch barrel compared to the 20-inch carbine version. It left the factory in 1951. It features the a round barrel, pistol grip stock, hard rubber butt plate, one piece trigger, open sights, no cross bolt safety, and of course, has a takedown action that aids both cleaning and transporting. It is interesting to note that this rifle uses the older, more conventional rifling with 6 deep grooves rather than the Micro-Groove rifling used on later Marlin rifles. The rifle has seen a fair amount of use although the bore’s appearance belies this. The barrel, receiver, and lever all exhibit the remnants of pitting or rust. At some point, the rifle was cleaned removing much of the original finish. It is possible that steel wool was used.  The barrel has been drilled and tapped for kind of side mount. Surprisingly, the wood furniture exhibits only light wear, mainly on the fore end, but no cracks. In contrast to the external surface of the rifle, the bore is in excellent shape and exhibits no rust or pitting. The action is tight and has no hint of looseness. As a result, this rifle should still be very accurate.
