Description:
The Auto 5 was the first commercially successful semi-automatic shotgun, designed by the famous John M. Browning in 1898. Originally, he took the design to Winchester, whom he had previously sold his designs to. When they refused his terms, he took the design to Remington, but the then president of Remington passed away, forcing Browning to take the gun to FN in Belgium. Eventually, the Auto 5 was built under license by Remington as the Model 11. Browning considered the Auto 5 his best design, and it was produced continuously for nearly one hundred years. The Auto-5 shown is the special “3-shot” model meaning it is intended to hold 2 in the magazine tube and 1 in the chamber. The magazine tube and fore end both are shorter than on a standard Auto-5 and the words “Browning 3-Shot” are stamped into the bottom of the fore end. According to the Browning , this Auto-5 was built prior to World War Two, though it would be difficult to pin down an exact year. Unsurprisingly, it has the early trigger-guard mounted safety rather than a push-button safety. Considering its age, the shotgun is in good condition. The butt stock has been altered from factory condition with a rubber butt pad being installed. Mechanically it is in excellent shape and the bore is very bright with no rust and pitting. There are some marks around the bottom of the bead. This occurred during the installation of the bead front sight. Initially, installing the bead will leave it sticking all the way through into the bore; a file is then used to trim it down to length to match the inside wall of the barrel. It is barely noticeable and will not affect the pattern. The bead dot itself appears to be made of ivory. The bluing is worn in some spots, which is common among older Auto-5s. Most of the wear is one the receiver’s lower edges. The 29.5-inch barrel exhibits loss in the usual spots due to movement of the barrel during recoil and friction against the fore end. Both of the receiver and barrel show minor pitting in certain spots. The wood exhibits a dried and “cracked finish”. The rear of the fore end has a crack but repairs for it would be fairly simple. Most of the markings remain in pristine shape. It is interesting that, while the mag tube is shorter than on the Standard Auto-5 model, it still requires the presence of a plug to limit the shotgun to a total capacity of 3 shots. Removing the plug allows for 3 shots in the tube instead of two. This Auto-5 would make a nice addition to any Browning collection.
