Payment Types Accepted: Checks, Credit Cards, PayPal Description: This is an original U.S. Civil War Federal Artillery Enlisted Shell Jacket in excellent untouched condition. This type of jacket was worn by countless Federal artillery soldiers during the Civil War. The Jacket is constructed of fine wool material dyed a deep indigo blue with the blue color still strong. Cloth body exhibits virtually no visible moth nips or holes so common in these wool garments. The Jacket features a standup collar. Approximately 2.50” tall with 3/8” wide, artillery-red piping or lacing decorating the edges, collar is adorned with two, cuff size, eagle ‘shield’ brass buttons set back on each side. Both buttons are offset by additional short strips of red braid. Collar braid is bright, tight. The Jacket front reflects 12-button closure with twelve, original brass eagle ‘shield’ buttons securely sewn to the flap edge. The buttons are all original with marker marks. Both sleeve cuffs are functional and complete with two buttons each. Cuffs also exhibit the chevron-style, red braid. Artillery braiding also runs down the opposite (button hole) flap, circles around the entire bottom edge of the jacket and rises to each shoulder from the two original belt-rest pads “pillows” sewn on the jacket backside and are original to the jacket. Interior grey/brown wool body of this uniform jacket is in excellent condition and is all original. The inner sleeve lining is white cotton and the right interior shoulder is inspection ink stamped which is hard to read but has a clear U.S. in the center and is marked size 2. Approximate Measurements: Bottom of Collar to shoulder: 6″ Shoulder to sleeve: 25″ Shoulder to shoulder: 16-1/4″ Chest width: 16-1/2” Waist width: 17-1/2” Hip width: 17-1/2″ Front length from top of collar to bottom of jacket: 23″. The shell jacket proved to be a tough, light and very serviceable garment worn by Union Cavalry troopers and mounted Artillerymen during the war. These jackets were prescribed for issue to all Artillerymen in the Federal Army. This jacket will make a nice addition to any Civil War collection. SOLD |
