The Mangeot & Coblain double action revolver was purchased on contract in small numbers by the Confederacy during the American Civil War. It was one of many foreign revolvers purchased to supplement their meager manufacturing capability. During the American Civil War, the South lacked sufficient ability to manufacture weapons in large quantities in an expedient capacity, due largely to a previous reliance on Northern manufacture. As a result, the South required and sought assistance from foreign powers for procuring their military needs. Caleb Huse was a major in the Confederate States Army, acting primarily as an arms procurement agent and purchasing specialist during the American Civil War. He is most well-known for his successful acquisition of weapons contracts with various European nations. From his London base through the London Armoury Company, Huse purchased as many percussion and pinfire revolvers as he could get. However, the rather small quantities and the lack of information in the remaining Confederate archives makes it impossible to estimate the number of these revolvers purchased by the Confederacy to be used by southern soldiers. The overall condition is fine. Original finish. Excellent, tight action. The bore is mostly bright, with light frosting. Sharp markings. The grip is in fine shape with well-defined checkering and light wear. This example showcases traditional floral engravings. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
