Here we present an antique English J.D. Smith Double Barrel Percussion Side by Side Hammer Shotgun, made sometime in the mid-19th Century in Braintree, England. Braintree is a town in Essex, England located 10 miles northeast of Chelmsford and 15 miles west of Colchester.
It features a half-length stock and it is really quite light and handy compared to many of its American contemporaries. This would likely have been exported from England to a country like the United States with a thriving market for all sorts of firearms. As people moved West and settled in remote areas, hunting was especially important to put food on the table and for protecting the homestead. This would have been a good gun for fowl hunting.
The rib is marked “J.D. SMITH. BRAINTREE.” and has game scenes on both sides of the lock.
The overall condition is nearing fine. Robust action (modern nipples). The bore is clear and remains in good shape for its age. The stock is solid with a nice smooth finish and checkering. Sharp engravings. The left barrel has a few small dents.
