Description:
Engraved SILVER/GOLD/NICKEL/IVORY Antique COLT Model 1849 POCKET Revolver

Originally Made in 1852; With Carved Eagle/Snake Grip

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver that has been beautifully engraved and stocked with carved ivory at some point. This revolver was originally made in 1852 in Hartford, Connecticut. It features a barrel treatment that makes it resemble the much larger Dragoon, with the multi-faceted breech-end and transition to round. The stagecoach cylinder scene has been engraved. The frame, grip frame, barrel, and hammer have Germanic floral scroll with a punch-dot background. There are linear border transitions around the recoil shield, breech-end of the barrel, and the muzzle. The hammer is engraved with a Gustave Young-inspired wolf’s head. A federal US shield motif was employed at the top of the grip frame. It is stocked with carved ivory grips with the very popular “Mexican” eagle/snake motif. Hammer, trigger, screws, and the scene portion of the cylinder have been gold-plated, the trigger guard and grip frame silver-plated, and the rest nickel-plated. There is a possible clue as to the engraver of this piece just ahead of the barrel address, which looks like a set of initials or signature mark.

The overall condition is very fine. Old but virtually complete silver (grip frame & trigger guard), gold, and nickel re-finish. Excellent action. Nice bore with good rifling. The entire piece is almost covered in clear floral scroll engravings. Numbers match. Solid ivory grips in fine condition. The case and the accoutrements are in good condition. The case has some separation at the top left corner and the latch on the lid is slightly off from the latch on the bottom. A visually stunning firearm.
