The "(Anchor)"-marked barrel has an overall mottled plum-brown patina mixing with smooth gray along its length. At some point in the past, the bayonet rail was ground nearly flush, but the original markings are and edges are still crisp and sharp. The "P. / H.B.R." inspected frame has a darkly mottled gray patina with spots of dark freckling and mild surface pitting on the hammer and breechblock, with slightly brighter metal showing through. The walnut forend is original and is in very good condition with numerous handling marks and minor surface blemishes throughout the thick military oil finish. The buttstock is a later, well-made replacement, and is in fine shape with only some minor handling marks in the smooth oil finish. The rifle comes with a correct metal ramrod and is a good-very good example of a rather rare US naval rifle.
