Here is a very nice all-original and un-modified Marlin Model 1894 Take-Down rifle chambered in .25-20 Winchester caliber manufactured sometime around 1910. While the exterior shows some patina and wear from poor storage practices, the mechanics are in excellent condition. This lever-action Marlin 1894 Take-Down rifle featured a case colored receiver, lever, buttplate, hammer, and forend cap, a blued 24" inch octagon barrel, a blued full-length magazine tube with a 10 round capacity, a straight-grip American Walnut stock set with an oil finish, and a quick take-down design. To take the gun apart, the lever is knocked out to the left, the magazine tube is pulled out past the muzzle with a push of the lever on the knurled endcap, and the front half of the gun screws off of the frame and buttstock. As mentioned earlier, this Marlin is a solid and honest gun in good working order with a good look to it. The factory case colors on the gun have turned to a mottled brown-blue patina on the receiver, lever, hammer, forend cap, and buttplate of the gun while the barrel and magazine tube show a even brownish-blue from the receiver to the muzzle. All of the factory markings are crisp and clear, particularly the barrel address. The serial number on the receiver does show some marring from someone using an improper tool to bang out and in the take-down release lever. This Marlin has no extra holes in it and all of the screws and pins in it appear to be original and in good shape. The top of the receiver is factory drilled and tapped for the rare Hepburn receiver sight; this was only done on the earlier '94's. The original stock set on this Marlin '94 is in good condition overall, free from any major damage or repairs. The wood shows some minor handling and storage marks and the expected dings and dents that come from light use and age. All of the stock hardware is intact and in good condition including the forend cap, buttplate, and take-down metal on the back end of the barrel assembly. All of the screws in the buttplate and forend cap are original. The action on this Marlin is still tight but smooth. The lever has no droop in it when it battery and you can feel how tight everything fits together when working the action. It really has been worked very little comparative to it's age. Unlike many old take-down rifles we have come across, the barrel and forearm assembly mate to the receiver perfectly tight on this Marlin with ZERO wiggle or slop. It feels so solid if you didn't know any better you would think it is a solid frame gun rather than a take-down model. The only deduction mechanically from this Marlin '94 is the bore. The bore appears somewhat dark but has good rifling in it throughout the barrel. Given the time period when this was made, a lot of black powder .25-20 ammunition was still floating around. It would only take one magazine full of black powder ammo fired thru this rifle without proper cleaning afterwards to cause some light pitting in the bore, and this is what probably happened here. There is no deep pitting or major damage, just mainly the grooves appear dark when viewed from the muzzle with a light. The pitting is light enough that is should have no real noticeable effect on accuracy or function. In fact, it would probably look better if someone fired a box of metal jacketed ammo through this Marlin to polish it up a little. All of the controls on this Marlin still work perfectly, the loading gate stays closed with good spring pressure, the hammer still has both the safety notch and full-cock notches intact, and the trigger will only drop the hammer from full cock with a nice crisp break. If you have been looking for a handsome vintage Marlin 1894 Take-Down for your collection that you can admire as both a collectible and as a fun shooter on occasion, this circa 1910 production Marlin Model '94 Take-Down in .25-20 Winchester would be an excellent choice.
