Description: General Specs: Browning, Year 1960, 20 Gauge, Chokes IC/M, LOP 14 1/4", DAH 2 1/4", DAC 1 7/16" Serial Number: 20602 The Browning Superposed was the first prominent over/under introduced to the USA beginning in 1931 and has been used in the field and at gun clubs with over 90 years of proven, rock-solid performance. These are hand-fitted, quality guns made one at a time by skilled craftsman that are a dying breed. Produced in plain-jane field grades to the most elaborately engraved and finely stocked shotguns ever seen, production of the Browning Superposed was done in Belgium, from 1931 through 1977 when traditional production stopped. The Pointer Grade was introduced in 1960, replacing the Grade III of the 1950’s. The engraving pattern was nearly full coverage fine scroll and game scene vignettes. The wood was fine English walnut with notable figure. The Pointer Grade was made in very small numbers and is a highly sought after Superposed, especially in the 20ga. guns. This fine Pigeon Grade Superposed Lightning in 20ga., sn20602 built in 1960, has hard to find IC/M chokes and marked as such, making it a much more desirable gun than a similar gun with Skeet chokes which are so common. As you compare this gun to others, keep in mind that the most desirable Superposed guns are the long tang, round knob guns built before 1966 when the infamous salt wood guns surfaced, and Browning cut production costs by using short tangs on their guns. This exceptionally light 6-pound Superposed Lightning (most weigh over 6 1/2lbs) shows like a new gun, with 99.5% barrel blue and French grey on the metal, and 99.5% wood finish. The barrels are tight on the hinge and top lever is well right of center. The superbly executed engraving is signed on both sides of the action by N. Watrin (Nelly), a notable FN Browning factory engraver. The gorgeous English walnut stock shows more figure than most Pointer Grade guns, and it has no cracks or repairs, shows perfect wood-to-metal fit, and 14 ¼” LOP to the original curved butt Browning butt plate. Guns built after 1965 were prone to salt contamination and rust because of the manner which Browning cured their wood. The marketplace has an aversion to the salt wood era guns and later guns with short tangs and/or square knob pistol grips. The early guns like this one are highly desirable. This is a great upland gun that is balanced to perfection and light enough to carry all day afield. With the factory 3” chambers you can even chase tough game with magnum loads. THE RARITY OF THIS POINTER GRADE MAKES FOR A SUPER INVESTMENT GRADE FIREARM, WITH ONLY 200 OR SO POINTER GRADES MADE IN 20GA. AND ONLY 117 IN THE LIGHTNING HUNTING STYLE CONFIGURATION. The value of these earlier Superposed guns continues to climb, so you can invest in this gun and enjoy its use as it gains value. We have priced this gun to sell and if you are the new owner, you will have instant equity in such a high-condition, long tang, round knob Superposed. Thanks for looking!
