Payment Types Accepted: Visa,Master Card, Discover,Check Description: Here we have an honest and true Colt Model 1878 chambered in the classic .45 Colt cartridge manufactured in 1899. The Colt M1878 is a double-action revolver that was manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company from 1878 to 1907. It is often referred to as the "Frontier" or the "Double Action Army" revolver. A total of 51,210 Model 1878 revolvers were manufactured during it's production run, including 4,600 for the US Ordnance Department. The M1878 was designed by William Mason, Colt's factory manager and Charles Brinckerhoff Richards, Superintendent of Engineering. It was similar in design to the Colt Model 1877. The Model 1878 had a larger frame, and is therefore sometimes referred to as the "large frame" double-action revolver, while the Model 1877 is likewise referred to as the "small frame" double-action revolver. The Model 1878 was considered a more robust and reliable design than the Model 1877. This particular gun retains most of it's original finish and is in excellent condition overall. The 5 1/2" barrel has a very good bore with plenty of rifling and is fitted with a blade style front sight at the end of the muzzle. The robust frame is fitted with hard rubber grips and has a trough rear sight on top. The right grip panel does have one chip. Typical of Colts of this period the cylinder has some play in it when uncocked but upon actual firing it locks up very tightly which is when it is most important. This Colt would make an excellent addition to an existing collection or a great beginning to a new collection. If only this gun could somehow tell the stories of adventures and exploits that it has seen. PRICE: SOLD We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, dealer of fine firearms since 1974.
