Description:
LAYAWAY?.... DATED 1796. About .90 cal flaring to 1 5/8” at the muzzle, 13 3/4” barrel with an oxidized bore showing old pitting throughout. The barrel of this blunderbuss is rather interesting as it appears to be of iron with an old period brass wash or plating, the barrel does indeed strongly attract a magnet. The metal surfaces show a very old cleaning, the edges of the octagon breech and turned medial at transition significantly softened from the years, and much of the barrel exterior has taken on a deep plum-brown patina showing some scattered small areas of old minor pitting and evident “brass” along the more protected edges and muzzle. The lockplate is a mix of plum-brown and deep gunmetal patina showing the expected old oxidation staining here and there. The lockplate is of typical construction equipped with heavy duty cock, bridled frizzen and frizzen spring with lightly chiseled extension, the frizzen and spring exhibiting some play. The lock retains strong and very nice markings with “REA” in the center, small “(Crown) / 1” below the pan and the rear with “1796” date and East India Co. heart-shaped trademark. The brass sideplate shows an old period repair and the remaining hardware is of iron consisting of single ramrod thimble, tailpipe, triggerguard with pineapple extension, buttplate and swivels. The embellishments along the triggerguard have softened from the years, the forward lock screw is rather long and the rear of the lockplate is rather proud of the stock, but the arm appears to be in the original flint in every respect. The walnut stock remains in good condition having darkened from the years showing a number of thin cracks and minor chips near the nose, an old repair along the edge above the lockplate and some other scattered thin drying cracks and dings to be expected. There are faint remnants of checkering at the wrist, a simple steel ramrod is present and the lock seems to function well mechanically. A very respectable and desirable East India Co. blunderbuss with a lot of character. S/H $50 **2nd firearm ships FREE with this one!.... .Thanks, Greg #56-58
