Single shot percussion rifle with two position flip up rear sights and bayonet lug front sight. Originally a bright metal finish with iron mountings. Walnut stock has a plain straight grip and forearm with three barrel bands and a single sling swivel. Item features a smooth trigger and triggerguard with sling swivel to front. Markings include "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" to center of lock and SCARCE DATE"1862" at tail. Breech has "V/P/{eagle head}" markings. Walnut stock shows a weak and obscured inspector mark, possibly by William Penn Taylor. Taylor inspected many M1861 rifles dated 1862, according to Daum & Pate's text U.S. Military Arms Inspector Marks. Includes a solid piece tulip head steel ramrod. Condition: About good. Bore is dark with moderate oxidation and residue. This musket has seen a lot of action! Appears bre has pretty much been shot out. Most of finish has worn away and taken a deep grey-brown patina, with scattered pitting and losses. Wood stock has heavy scratches and mars overall.
