Colt’s Largest Slide Action Rifle!
Here we present an antique Colt Lightning Large Frame Slide Action Rifle, manufactured in 1888, just one year after the introduction of the Large Frame Lightning rifles and the .38-56 Winchester cartridge, in Hartford, Connecticut. The large-frame Lightning, also called the "Express Model", was manufactured between 1887 and 1894. Colt records indicate 6,496 large frame Lightnings were made in different big game calibers such as .38-56 WCF, .40-60 and .50-95 Express. The .38-56-255 Winchester Center Fire cartridge was introduced in 1887 by Winchester for the Winchester Model 1886 and was also used in the Marlin Model of 1895.
This specimen is chambered in .38-56-255 WCF, a very hearty cartridge for hunting big game, with plenty of firepower to take down deer, elk, and bear without hesitation! Even with the original black powder it would send a 255 grain solid projectile at about 1400 fps.
The overall condition is good. Good bore for age with strong rifling. The walnut stock is solid and shows use. Strong action, sliding of the bolt is a bit stiff. Clear markings. Strong, brown patina/finish.
