Description:
Many Gallager Carbines were used in the American Civil War by Union cavalry including units from Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Ironically, the designer of this primarily Union-issued carbine, Gallager, was a southerner from South Carolina. After being accepted for service by the U.S. Government the carbines were made in Philadelphia, Pa. by the Richardson & Overman firm. While still technically a cap and ball weapon, the lever-operated breech-loader was a vast improvement over muzzle-loading weapons of the time. The design of the Gallager allowed the use of pre-packaged paper "cartridges" which contained the proper amount of powder and a bullet, which could quickly be pressed into the chamber and closed. After cocking the hammer and applying a cap to the nipple it was ready to fire, a much faster process than having to ram the powder and bullet the entire length of the barrel to seat it properly. Armed with a Gallager carbine and a Colt Army or Navy revolver, a Union cavalryman would have quite the firepower advantage over the common soldier of the period. This particular Gallager is totally original and intact, never "improved" or modified since leaving the factory during the war. The original finish has turned a plum/gray patina, consistent on all of the metal parts. It has a nice battle-used look to it that really should appeal to the collector looking for a weapon that likely was on the front lines at some point. The original stock shows lots of dings, dents, scratches, and wear that is consistent with the rest of the gun. The worst of of wood damage is some small cracks at the toe, but as they stand now they are stable and protected from further damage from the buttplate. All of the stock hardware including the sling bar and ring, the patchbox, and buttplate are intact and in good shape. The action on this carbine is in perfect working order, opening smoothly and locking up perfectly tight when closed. The spring-loaded lever latch still has stout tension on it, and the hinges in the action mechanism are in perfect condition. The hammer still has both the half-cock and full-cock positions, and the trigger breaks nicely with a light pull. While the original 22" inch barrel does show pitting throughout the bore, the rifling is still well-defined. For all intents and purposes this Gallager Carbine appears to still be shootable. As you can see from the pictures, this Gallager really looks like it has witnessed a lot of important history and there is no doubt that it has been together as it sits now since leaving the factory. This carbine would make an excellent display piece in any antique military weapons collection, as well as an investment.
