Description:
The Model 1914 is one of the best military bolt actions ever built. It is based upon the Mauser Model of 1898, but uses a cock-on-closing bolt and is chambered in the standard .303 British. Capacity is 5+1. Having owned one of these rifles, the author can attest to the model’s accuracy. They have very strong actions, and a level  of accuracy which matches their German counterparts. The serial numbers on the receiver and bolt match. The stock has the “IW” markings of Winchester. However, the receiver, barrel and other parts were produced by Eddystone. The rifle possesses most if not all of the proper markings on the receiver and barrel. The bolt matches the receiver in terms of serial number, although the rear sight does not. In terms of condition, the bore is dark with pitting but the rifling is still intact and well defined for the most part. With jacketed bullets the rifle should still have fairly good accuracy. The stock exhibits some wear, mainly on the upper hand guard. There is a small crack at the butt on the right side. Forward of this, the butt has the proper stamps including the “IW” mentioned previously. On the left side there are two spots were an armorer made repairs to the stock. There is a repair on the right side that is the mirror opposite of the forward most repair on the left side. Given the seamless transition between the surface of the repairs and the rest of the stock, the person was clearly an expert. At some point, someone polished the surface of the receiver bridge, removing much of the original finish. Fortunately, neither the “ERA”, nor the serial number were affected. Why the polishing was done is unclear, as the receiver was not stamped in this area, nor is there any evidence of pitting. Some form of scratch or grind marks appear on the base for the volley sight though its markings remain visibly intact. The inside, rear edge of the right side front sight protector has suffered what is most likely battle damage. Please see the pictures.
