This example is lacking in almost all major collections. This is a Springfield altered Model 1840 Musket by Colt for the Crimean War. Im not going to go into great detail about the history of these but Tim Prince wrote a description on one he had some time ago. If you would like to read the history about these, his description is the go to. To find simply google "Colt altered Russian Musket". This example is very good. The barrel retains approximately 75% Colt applied finish. The hammer and lock shows traces of the Colt applied color case hardened finish. Mechanically excellent. The stock is nice condition. There is a faint cartouche on the left flat. Supposedly less then 10 of these are known in the states. I know of 3 others personally. The example Tim had and an example in a friend of mines collection. Also not pictured is an original and correct bayonet that comes with it.
