The French military wanted to concentrate on the development of a semi-automatic rifle for the entirety of their infantry in 1938. However, the development of this idea was hampered by the French capitulation in 1940. Thus, even though the model and design prototypes started in the 30‚‚s, the design was not adopted into French service for production until 1949, thus leading to the MAS-1949 designation.
In 1957, the improved MAS-1949 was adopted with upgrades from lessons learned from field experience. The rifles were shortened, lightened, and an integrated grenade laucher/compensator was installed, paired with an integral grenade sight which cut off the gas system to cycle grenade blanks.
This rifle includes one 10-round magazine, a bayonet w/ scabbard, a sling, a rubber butt pad, and cleaning tools with a pouch
