Description:
SOLD   This is a very handsome single-shot Winchester Model 68 bolt-action .22 rifle made sometime between 1934 and 1946.  They were not serial numbered so there is no way to pin down the exact date.  The Model 68 was essentially a Model 67 without a normal rear sight, rather a barrel-mounted aperture/peep sight was factory installed instead just ahead of the bolt opening.  The front sight consists of a ramped blade with a sight hood.  There were approximately 100,000 manufactured during the production run, making much more scarce than a 67, of which almost 400,000 were made.  This particular example is in excellent condition overall, and is 100% original.  The factory blue finish rates 97%, with the only deductions coming from some slight wear to the bottom of the triggerguard bow and a few tiny handling marks on the barrel.  The polished and plated bolt is still in superb condition as well, bright and clean with all of the factory plating still intact. All of the factory markings are 100% legible and sharp, and the bore in the 27" inch barrel is in perfect condition.  The unique original sights are still on this rifle and in good working condition, however, the rear screw-in aperature is not with the rifle.  It was likely removed by someone who wanted a larger sight picture.  It still works just fine as-is, but a number of different apertures could be screwed into the sight by the next owner should he or she choose.  The original stock on this Winchester is in very good condition, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  The worst of the deductions from the stock come from a pair scratches on the right side of the buttstock.  The original factory buttplate is still intact and in good condition.  There are NO extra holes in this rifle in the metal or wood (from sling swivels).  This Winchester Model 68 should still shoot just as reliably and accurately today as the day it left the factory 76 or more years ago!  SOLD
