Here we present an antique American Standard Tool Co. Tip-Up .22 Rimfire Revolver, made circa 1870 in Newark, New Jersey. This small, 7 shot .22 revolver was a direct copy of the successful Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 Second Issue Revolver. While the making of the American Standard Tool revolver commenced after Smith & Wesson’s Rollin White patent expired in 1869, the Manhattan Firearms Mfg. Co. (the predecessor to American Standard Tool) made direct and quality copies of the S&W pistol without any regard to their patent infringement.
The Manhattan Co. became part of American Standard Tool in 1868 after briefly closing its doors. Interestingly, Manhattan was also famous for its virtual copies of Colt’s patents. In some ways, this is not terribly different than what goes on today in the firearms industry. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
The overall condition is good. The action (hammer/trigger) are strong. The cylinder does not index or lock up well. The bore is dim with defined rifling. The grips are solid.
