Description:
BRITISH Brass Barrel Flintlock BLUNDERBUSS w BAYONET Collins/Winton Antique

Birmingham Proofed Close Range Shotgun

Here we present an antique British Brass Barreled Flintlock Blunderbuss with an Integral Bayonet by Collins of Winton, circa the early-1800s. The blunderbuss is a firearm with a short, large caliber barrel. They are flared at the muzzle, frequently throughout the entire bore, and used with shot and other projectiles. The blunderbuss is commonly considered to be an early predecessor of the modern day shotgun, with similar military and defensive use. It was effective only at short range, lacking accuracy at long range.

This one has the distinct advantage of having an integral folding bayonet that can be put to use once the single charge has been fired, making it an imposing weapon even when empty. Birmingham proofs on the barrel. “WINTON” (in Dorset, England) is marked on top of the barrel. The lock is nicely engraved and marked for the maker “COLLINS”. The butt plate and trigger guard are of iron and modestly engraved.

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The cock is a replacement. The bore is smooth and patinaed. The stock is smooth and solid with sharp hand-checkering on the wrist. The snap bayonet has lost its spring tension but can be put in place manually. The attachment point at the muzzle has worn through.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 14-1/2 inches.

The muzzle flares to 1 ¼” at its greatest diameter.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
