Description:
#4784 Smith & Wesson No.3 Second Model S/A (AKA“Old Model American”), a very scarce early specimen of this model being serial numbered in the 8XXX range! It also has the extremely scarce 6” original barrel length rather than the common 8” length. This model serial number started in the 8XXX range (1872) and was made for just three years ending in 1874…so this particular big S&W was obviously a very early 1872 production, a year earlier than the Colt S/A! Chambered for the 44S&W American cartridge, it has a G-VG bore with strong rifling but also some lead build-up and scattered light pitting. About a 6-7 on a scale of 10 and with a VG action, so looking good enough to still be a shooter (after a safety blessing by your competent gunsmith, of course!) The exterior is the weak point on this big revolver. Like many frontier nickeled guns, the worn or “peeled” areas got light to moderately pitted from long storage in a damp leather holster and continued use in bad weather by some cowboy or outlaw.( More than likely, a storekeeper or lawman would’ve taken much better care of his gun.) VG wood grips. A very desireable big Smith & Wesson, and while suffering from bad storage, it is still a VERY hard gun to find with this short original 6” barrel length! G-VG as described. $2150
