Description:
This is a very handsome and clean 1943-vintage R.O.F. Enfield No.4 Nk.1 rifle in .303 British.  It is an all-original rifle and all of the serial numbered parts are matching.  The No.4 Mk.1 was the first production model of the No.4 Enfield and can be identified by the bolt release on the receiver, where it is located at the rear and uses a spring-loaded latch just behind the stripper clip guide.  The later No.4 Mk.1* had the bolt release at the front of the receiver just behind where it sits when in battery.  These No.4 Mk.1 rifles were essentially a improved and refined version of the SMLE No.1 rifles, designed to be easier and cheaper to produce than the SMLE but still be just as strong, reliable, and accurate.  This particular example is serial number AA22936 built at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Fazakerley just before the switch-over to the Mk.1* was made.  This WW2-production No.4 remains in excellent condition overall with perfect mechanics.  All of the metal parts retain 95% of their oil-blackened finish.  It is impossible to tell whether it went thru any arsenal rebuild as it is not marked with any rebuild marks and all of the serial numbered parts are stamped-matching rather than electro-penciled.  All of the markings on the rifle are still intact although slightly faint in spots.  The wrist loop extension of the receiver is marked only on the left side with somewhat jumbled and clumsy markings of "ROF" over "2 43" over the serial number "AA22936".  The left side flat of the receiver is stamped with "No.4 Mk.1".  The only parts that are serial numbered are the bolt (on rear face of handle), the receiver, and the magazine.  As mentioned earlier, all three parts are matching.  There are import marks on this rifle but they are tiny and nearly impossible to see unless you look VERY closely.  These import marks consist of a tiny stamping of "IAC ALEX VA" just behind the trigger on the lower flat of the wrist extension which translates to INTERARMCO in Alexandria, VA.  The other import mark is on the let side of the receiver ring where is stamped with a tiny ".303 BRIT" over "U.K.".  Something else that is pretty cool is that this No.4 Mk.1 still has the serial numbered-matching muzzle tag on it dated 1981 that specifies also that the rifle has 2-groove rifling.  We are not sure if this is a British Military applied tag or importer installed tag, either way it is the only muzzle tag we have seen on one of these in years.  The bore in this R.O.F. No.4 is excellent.  The bore is mirror-bright and pristine with sharp rifling and no visible imperfections or pitting of any kind from the chamber to the crown of the muzzle.  The original sights are in excellent condition both front and rear.  The rear sight is a very impressive milled ladder sight that flips up with a peep aperture and distance settings from 200 to 1300 meters.  The elevation adjustment is made by turning a knurled wheel at the top of the sight with click settings where one full turn equals 6 clicks.  The stock set on this Enfield is very handsome with all 4 pieces a perfect match in both color and condition.  The wood shows only some scattered very minor handling/storage marks in the wood with no major damage or eyesores.  The top rearward handguard has factory grasping grooves on both sides of it.  All of the stock pieces fit together nicely, and all of the original stock hardware is intact and in great shape including the aluminum alloy buttplate with a trap, the mid-barrel band, and the forend caps and top barrel band.  The stock is fitted with sling swivels at the mid-barrel band and on the keel of the buttstock.  All four pieces of the stock set are totally free from any cracks or repairs.  The original magazine in this No.4 Mk.1 is in great shape with perfect feed lips and a strong follower spring. It locks into place perfectly in this rifle.  The magazine is stamped with the matching serial number on the bottom flat.  All in all, this is a very handsome and clean original WW2-production No.4 Mk.1 rifle.  We have no doubt that it will still function just as reliably and accurately today as it did when it originally left the factory over 79 years ago.  If you have been looking for an investment-worthy No.4 Mk.1 this R.O.F. Fazakerley example would be an excellent choice.
