Description:
General Specs: Fox/Savage, Year 1939, 12 Gauge, 7lb 1oz, Chokes .020/ .032, LOP 14 3/16", DAH 3 1/8", DAC 1 13/16"
Serial Number: 35018

When the Fox SP Grade was introduced in 1932, the depression was on, and the Savage owned Fox factory needed new business. Just a year before, Winchester introduced the Model 21, a popular shotgun then and now. Fox saw the opportunity to make some cost saving changes in the appearance of the Fox with the new SP Grade.  With its smooth-sided black frame, more rounded stock and action, the gun appeared more an English boxlock and similar to the new Model 21. Internally it was exactly like every other gun Fox produced and by 1934, Savage/Fox introduced the SPE Skeet and Upland Game gun.

From a 1935 catalog: The Fox SP Grade Skeet and Upland Game Gun is an arm with black gun-metal finish frame, handsomely engraved; imported walnut stock and forend with fine mesh checkering. The length and boring of barrels are correct for use on quail, partridge, woodcock, and other upland game birds at ranges up to 35 yards. These specifications are also correct for skeet shooting.
Offered for sale is this excellent example of the Fox SP Grade gun. While the standard gun had 26" barrels, this SP comes with 28" and is choked MOD/ LITE FULL giving a bit more range for those upland birds that get going sooner! Its bores show as mirrors and has 2 3/4" chambers and an extractor. The furniture is fine straight grained walnut with well spaced mineral streaks and is free of damage. The forend matches the stock with the same grain pattern continuing forward to an inset ebony wedge, checkering matches on both forend and wrist and is in excellent shape. The pistol grip and buttplate are both perfectly fit with hard rubber.

Fox described their new SP frame as "Streamline", when everything from radios to locomotives was designed to be fast and modern looking, streamline was the new vernacular, and it is indeed sleek, gone are the hard edges, the action is rounded both top and bottom, the breech balls filed to the shape of the barrels like an XE grade, the head of the stock is rounded with no “side panels”...this is a true round bodied Fox. The gun handles like most every Fox, balanced 1/8" forward of the hinge pin and weighing 7lbs 1oz. It has double triggers breaking cleanly at 5.9 and 5.7lbs respectively.

What a great gun, built for an emerging market with modern looks and finishes, it still has everything an upland shooter needs. Enjoy.
