Purdey & Sons bar-in-wood hammergun with original 30” nitro proofed Damascus barrels. Serial number 10,184 comes with a letter and build sheet from Purdeys. Nice engraving, residual case coloring on the lock plates, medium height rebounding hammers, toplever, and highly figured English walnut. No. 1 of a trio made for Lord Ormathwaite in 1878. London nitro proofed for 2-3/4” shotshells in 2012. Action can be opened when hammers are cocked. Easy to carry for a day afield at 6lb 9oz. *** The original 30” nitro Damascus barrels have extractors and are topped with a solid concave swamped rib. The rib is inscribed “J. Purdey & Sons. 314 ½ Oxford Street. London.”. The barrels have been professionally re-browned sometime recently and look great. Reproofed in London in 2012 for 2-3/4” nitro shotshells. At that time the bore diameter was stamped on the flats as 18.8mm which equates to 0.740”. The right barrel is bored 0.742 and has a constriction of 0.006 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025. The left barrel is bored 0.743 with a constriction of 0.007 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.020. Great choking for upland gunning and clays! *** The original stock is made of highly figured English walnut typical of the period. It has a thin solid heelplate. The stock and forearm have been professionally refinished and the checkering refreshed. I have looked hard to find cracks in the stock but if they are present they have been professionally repaired. There are a few minor handling marks and the trigger guard tang is a little proud of the wood at the end nearest the triggers. Stock dimensions are 14-1/16” by 1-5/8” by 2-1/8”. Originally made with cast-off for the righthand shot it is currently cast on about 1/4” for the lefthand shot but can easily be re-bent back to cast-off. *** Purdey bar-in-woods are rare as few of them were ever made and are much sought-after by collectors and knowledgeable shooters. Rarer still are ones with their original Damascus barrels. Nice examples of these skeletal actions do not come available very often. Don’t let it slip away. *** Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. Please note that the photographs are part of the description. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when the gun is delivered to purchaser’s FFL dealer. Returns at buyer’s expense. SOLD Antique: Yes |
