Description:
Manufactured in the Spring or early Summer of 1943 as part of the first serial number block assigned to Winchester, this is a desirable, all-correct and apparently matching early production US M1 Carbine. A textbook example that shows no sign of rebuild, refurbishment or restoration, the carbine retains its early graphite-grey parkerized finish, no stake marks are present on the base of the flip-up peep sight, and all marked parts are coded for Winchester. The features include a 17" undated Winchester barrel, Type I narrow barrel band with no provision for bayonet, blued flat-top bolt, unmarked magazine release, 15-round magazine catch and push-button safety. The furniture pairs an oval cut high wood Walnut stock with 2-rivet high wood handguard, both maker's marked for Winchester, the former with a Crisp Ordnance Wheel cartouche beside Guy Drewery's inspection stamp on the right side, and the carbine is complete with "IW"-marked blued 15-round magazine, USGI green canvas sling and oiler.
Marvelously preserved, the weapon shows only light aging including fading of the phosphate finish on the right side of the receiver beneath the wood line, and appears to have seen little use in the decades since the Second World War. Likely purchased as surplus by the soldier, sailor or Marine who carried it in service during the war, original, non-refurbished M1 Carbines are considered rare, and this wonderfully original 1943-made weapon from Winchester represents a superb investment piece that would be a proud addition to any advanced collection.
Condition
Very fine to excellent, the gun has seen no refinish, rebuild or restoration, retaining 95-96% deep grey phosphate finish, the deduction attributed to high edge and operational wear-neither rust nor pitting is observed on any metal surface. The markings are well-struck, correct, and none show fading or buffing. As stated, all components are properly coded where appropriate, and no import mark, export mark or sign of service beyond The Second World War was found. The stock and handguard-both marked with crisp maker's stamps, the latter with a bold Ordnance Wheel and Drewry cartouche, are very good to excellent, having dings and scattered handling marks, a small nick from production at the rear of the upper tang, and no cracks, chips or repairs. Mechanically flawless, the action is smooth, and the bore is graded as near-mint, remaining perfectly bright with sharp rifling and no rust, pitting, frost or oxidation. An outstanding first block Winchester M1 Carbine.
