Description:
**SOLD**

This is an honest all-matching antique Colt Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Army revolver in .44-40 WCF caliber.  This Colt is an etched-panel gun with a 4.75" inch barrel manufactured in 1887.  This Colt has certainly witnessed a lot of history and the exterior patina shows it.  Most of the original blue and case-colored factory finishes have worn away to a nice and consistent bluish-brown color on all of the metal parts, but there are some spots of gloss blue still intact in some of the protected areas.  The etched panel is no longer visible on the left side of the barrel, but the 2 line address is still intact and legible on top of the barrel and the caliber marking of "44" is still intact on the bottom of the barrel under the cylinder pin.  The patent date stamp is still clean and legible on the left forward section of the frame, and all of the factory serial-numbered parts are matching including the frame, triggerguard, and rear backstrap of the frame.  The 3 serial numbers are all still pretty crisp and 100% legible.  While the cylinder and bushing are not numbered, this is correct for this vintage and they appear to be original to the gun.  As you can see from the pictures, most of the screws in this gun have really nice slots and clean heads on them with most of them even showing some original "fire" blue finish.  When we removed the well-worn factory hard rubber grips we found a couple of things.  First off, the grip frame area has punch dots evenly distributed on both sides.  This must have been an attempt to create more friction between the grips and frame for a more secure fit.  We can't really think of any other reason to do this.  Secondly, the grips have some initials and symbols scratched into the back of them.  The right grip panel has two upper case F's staggered and facing each other along with the letters "WWS" scratched into it.  The left grip panel has "XY" and some unknown symbol scratched into it.  There is no telling what any of it means, although the two F's that are staggered and facing each other look like a cattle brand.  The exterior of the grips are both nearly smooth, with the left grip panel showing more wear than the right.  This is likely due to being carried in a right-handed holster or in the right leg of a pair of chaps where the left grip panel would rub against the wearer's body.  The right side grip exterior has been bleached from black to a brown color, likely from being stored with the right side facing up for a long time with exposure to light.  Both grips still show the Rampant Colt logo, however much of the detail has been worn away.  The grips most certainly match the rest of the gun in degree of wear and fit the gun tightly.  The action on this Colt is incredibly smooth and is still perfectly "in time" no matter how fast or slow the action is worked.  All three hammer positions are still intact, the 1st "safety" position, half-cock, and full-cock.  The trigger is very nice, breaking with a light pull from full-cock only.  The bore in this Colt Frontier Six Shooter is very good with nice, strong rifling throughout the barrel with only a few tiny spots of light pitting.  It was a pleasant surprise how good the bore is given the exterior finish wear on this gun.  This Colt would probably shoot just as accurately and reliably today as it did 100 plus years ago with the proper black powder ammunition, however due to it's age of 135 years we cannot recommend that it be fired.  All in all, this is a very neat and original-looking Colt Single Action Army that has loads of character and is affordable.  America was still a very wild place in 1887 so there is no telling what all history this Colt has witnessed or participated in, it certainly did not spend decades in a desk drawer!  As an antique this Colt can be shipped directly to the buyer, no FFL needed.
