Description:
Here we have an honest and true 1887 mfg Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall single shot rifle chambered in .25-20 single shot caliber (which is not .25 Winchester). The .25-20 Single Shot is considered one of the first wildcat cartridges to be produced. In 1882 Remington adapted the cartridge for mass production and Maynard, Stevens and Winchester followed shortly thereafter. J. Francis Rabbeth designed the .25-20 Single Shot and in an article in the January 15, 1922 edition of the Rifleman’s Magazine said he used a breech loader to shoot a 2” ring with 15 shots at 200 yards. The .25-20 is an accurate caliber and still is used in single shot matches today. It is a good varmint and small game caliber too and is in the same class as the .25-20 WCF. The .25-20 Single Shot is capable of propelling a .257” dia. 86 grain bullet at 1,410 fps. with 380 ft.-lbs. of energy. The Model 1885 Single Shot rifle was famed gun designer John M. Browning’s first design and patent, and it was the first single shot to be built by Winchester. The patent for the Model 1885 rifle was what brought Browning and the Winchester Repeating Arms Company together for the beginning of their eventual 19-year association. Nearly 140,000 Model 1885s (both Low Walls and High Walls) were manufactured from September 1885 to June of 1920. This particular example has worn to a very nice warm grey patina and all markings are legible and sharp. It appears that the barrel has been shortened somewhat at some point in time and the rear sight has been replaced. The falling block action works smoothly and locks up tightly and the trigger is good with half and full cocked positions securing as they should. The butt plate is metal. The rich oil finished stock and forend have received a few dings over the years but are in good condition considering the age of this beautiful rifle. This rifle would make a great addition to an existing collection of antique firearms or an excellent way to start a new collection.
