Description:
c1852 mfr. Antique WHITNEY Variant M1842 “NEW HAMPSHIRE” Percussion MUSKET

MILITIA RIFLE with SOCKET BAYONET and SLING

Here we present an antique Whitney Variant Model 1842 New Hampshire Percussion Rifle-Musket, made on contract by Eli Whitney’s Whitneyville or Whitney Arms Co. in New Haven, Connecticut circa 1857. Whitney Variant Model 1842 muskets are believed to have been sold to the State of New Hampshire. In circa 1857 and 1858 New Hampshire acquired more than 1,000 of these muskets.

Though these examples are unmarked as to the maker, there were several factors that attribute these guns to Whitney based on a number of features that are common with other known non-armory pattern rifles and muskets produced by Whitney. These would have fallen into the muskets he provided that were part of his “Good and Serviceable Arms” line, which was focused on providing arms to state militias. The Good and Serviceable Arms were made of large lots of parts which he purchased from the federal armories and other contractors to assemble into rifle-muskets good enough for service with the states who, unlike the federal government, had lesser standards and did not use gauges during their inspections. He wasn’t shy about this either. These arms were good enough, better to be sure than many of the muskets being bought and shipped back from Europe, and they were less expensive than had they been built from the ground up with all the gauging that went into federal contracts.
Surviving records of the Ordnance Department communications with Whitney indicates that he expressed an active interest in the purchase of obsolete and condemned musket parts at government s held at both the Springfield and Harpers Ferry national armories almost immediately after he took over the management of the Whitney Armory in June 1842 and continued for at least 15 years. These muskets are referred to as “Whitney’s New Hampshire Rifle Muskets” because almost all examples have the state’s name stamped into the barrel. Most of these muskets, including this one, have the same rear sights used on Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company Model 1852 and early Model 1853 arms.

This exact musket is photographed and described as a Whitney Model 1842 “New Hampshire” rifled musket on pages 455-459 of George D. Moller’s book American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III.

The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Semi-bright bore with strong rifling. Solid stock. There is a split on the right stock flat that is stable. “1852” dated barrel tang and “NEW HAMPSHIRE” marked breech. The rear sight is a replacement. Both the leather sling and bayonet is in good shape. The bayonet is of European origin and not made for this rifle, however, it does fit quite well with just a slight bit of movement.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 42 inches.

Caliber:  .69 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
