Here we have an 1893 mfg Winchester Model 1892 lever action rifle chambered in .38-40 caliber. When asked by Winchester to design an improved lever action to compete with a recent Marlin offering, John Browning said he would have the prototype completed in under a month or it would be free. Within two weeks, Browning had a functioning prototype of the '92. The original Winchester company made 1,007,608 Model 1892 rifles. The Depression greatly affected sales of the Winchester '92, and at the start of World War II, Winchester dropped production when it retooled for the war effort. Production was not resumed after the war. This particular example was made in 1893 and is chambered in .38-40 caliber. Most of the finish has been worn off the metal parts over the years and there is some high edge wear and some pitting. The wood retains some of it's finish and is free of any major dings or dents. This rifle has a very handsome warmish grey patina. The 24 inch octagon barrel has a good bore and some rifling remains. The action is smooth and locks up tight like it should. The front sight is a dovetailed blade and the rear is an elevation adjustable buckhorn. This Winchester is fully functional and exudes character. If this '92 could talk it would surely tell tales of adventure. This rifle would make a great addition to a collection of cowboy guns or an excellent way to start a new colllection.
