Description:
Offered for sale is one (1) Colt 3rd Model Dragoon, serial number 18,438, Frame is a 4 screw cut-for-stock with artillery sight mounted on the top barrel flat.  Complete serial number is stamped on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, and cylinder.  Last 4 digits of serial number stamped on loading lever, arbor pin, and the wedge.  I did not remove the stocks from the backstrap as they were tight to the backstrap.  Action works perfectly and locks up on all cylinder stops on time.  What was original blue finish has turned to a brown patina.  A small amount of original varnish remains on right grip.  Iron backstrap retains 90+% nickel, brass trigger guard has 5%+ remaining plating, appears to me it is silver.     This 3rd model Dragoon was purchased by myself in October 2008.  Supplied with the gun was the original factory letter obtained by the seller.  Information of note on the Colt Factory Letter is: Finish-Blue/Plated, Type of Stock-Wood, Special Features-Furnished with a Shoulder Stock, Shipped to J.P. Moores Sons, Address-New York, New York, Date-April 26,1861, and finally Number of Same Type Guns in Shipment-60.  At the time of sale, seller told me what he knew of the guns history.  Bought from a family in rural Appalachia Tennessee around 1961 by the previous owner before himself.  This 1961 buyer held the gun for a number of years before selling.  What is also interesting about this original Colt 3rd Dragoon there is a set of initials consisting of three letters, JCJ, found clearly in four locations.  Those being the wood grip base on each side, the iron backstrap behind the lower screw, and the left barrel flat.  Harder to make out, I believe the same JCJ initials are also on the right barrel flat in the same relative position as the left barrel flat.  For sale in lower 48 states USA.  Prefer MO or certified check.  Will ship insured.  Depending on destination, will furnish shipping and insured charges at that time.  Thanks for looking.
