Originally sold in 1863 and No. 1 of a Pair, this gun is built on a round bar, backlock with non-rebounding “S” shaped serpentine hammers. The action has a Jones patent rotary-underlever, percussion fences. the action-body, lock plates, under-lever and trigger guard/tang engraved in the usual, for this period, best foliate-scroll, much hardening-color. Watertable has period London view proof marks and is engraved No. 1 in italics.

Nicely figured stock with straight hand grip and Purdey’s distinctive pattern flat-top checkering. Smooth steel butt with blued steel butt-plate with Purdey’s pinwheel engraving pattern around each screw. Stock oval is engraved with period styling monogram. Splinter forend is fully checkered with steel tip and is attached to barrels with side nail with oval shaped escutcheons with circular extensions that are engraved.

30 ½" twist Damascus barrels are superbly struck and both measuring precisely .775” and carry “J.P” initials on the barrel flats with period London black powder proof marks. Smooth concave game rib is engraved: J. Purdey 314 ½ Oxford St. London, Purdey’s address from 1826 to 1883.

Barrels retain some of what I suspect is the original brown in protected areas along the bottom of the barrels. Bores remain bright and excellent with some signs of very shallow freckling.

Trigger bow and tang retains almost all of an old re-black, butt plate shows 80% plus of what may be the original black.

I suspect action has been re-colored judging by the amount of color left and its mottled appearance.

Stock shows signs of handling and its age but checkering and borders remain sharp and well defined, and metal and stock oval are well fit to the surface of the stock.

Gun is in a O&L flat single gun flat case with old red baize interior and reproduction trade label with correct address. Includes various accoutrements. Case weighs just over 20 lbs.
