On Hold! This is a really nice unmodified Civil War Vintage Model 1860 Spender Carbine with a great look to it...far better than most we find on the market. These were purchased in large quantities for the Union Army during the Civil War and with their 7 shot tubular magazine and .52 caliber cartridges, they were ideal for Cavalry use when they began to hit the battlefields in 1863. It's main competitor was the Henry Rifle by New Haven Arms (later Winchester) had a 15 round magazine which gave it an advantage in firepower but was much more fragile than the overbuilt Spencer. They were not as common either. This is a true Civil War issued Spencer, not a Model 1865 Burnside Contract or a post war rebuilt Model 1860. This is the one the Civil War Collectors struggle to find as the 1860's really got used, many were modified to .50 caliber after the war as well, so an original example in nice displayable condition is not always easy to find. Following the Civil War, many of these Spencers were sold off on the Surplus market and used on the American Frontier and even to other militaries like France which used them in the early 1870's in their war with Prussia.
This one has a nice combination of condition and wear. It shows just enough cavalry use..such as the metal swivel of the cavarlyman's shoulder sling lightly rubbing into the left side of the stock... to let you know IT WAS THERE! Used but well looked after and not banged around too much or abused. Original 56-52 Caliber. Standard 22 inch barrel with saddle ring, ladder rear sight, and early correct magazine tube with flat base. The rear sling base is present but the swivel is missing..replacements aren't hard to find. It has the early Spencer Boston Mass. Address on top of the frame and the serial number is in the 30,000 range. According to Springfield Research's index of military guns from the National Archives, this one is just a few digits away from other 1860 Spenders that were issued to the 6th Indiana Cavalry and Illionois Cavalry Units in 1863 and 1864. Overall Condition is a very solid NRA Antique Very Good with an absolutely gorgeous light brown patina on the metal and nice solid wood that's never been cleaned or sanded. You can still see both of the military inspector cartouches on the stock...these are usually worn away. The wood has perfect wood to metal fit with the usual light dings and scratches you find on Civil War weapons but much nicer than most. It has a great look to it and there is an old collection or museum number taped to the bottom toe of the stock from long ago. My guess is that it spent some time on display somewhere because there is a light coating of archival grade wax to prevent oxidation...the kind they use in museums. The action works just like it should and the bore is Excellent with its early and correct 6 groove rifling. Antique, Pre-1898 Manufacture and the Cartridge is Obsolete. $50.00 shipping. On Hold!
