Description:
SOLD **  Ralf Martini Gunmaker -- Big Game Magazine Rifle -- .338 Win. Mag. -- new Swarovski scope -- Mint

Description:
This is a full & total custom by Ralf Martini of Martini Gunmakers, Creston, B.C. Canada.
Built on a Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 action; completely overworked.

The sole maker at Martini Gunmakers (wood and metal) is Ralf Martini. If you never had a chance to hold a Ralf Martini rifle, you have missed something.

Ralf is a member of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild along with many highly reputable gunmakers, most in the US.  When Heym AG of Germany discovered the stock design of their large double square bridge Safari rifle needed to be overhauled, of all the gun makers in the ACGG, they chose Ralf, not just because Ralf is a great maker (which he is), but because his stock designs cannot be improved. If you have ever shouldered a Ralf Martini rifle, you wouldn’t have to ask why Heym AG chose his design.

For this rifle listed here, the custom action features a jeweled bolt, 3-position safety, built-up and checkered bolt stop, Blackburn hinged floorplate with trigger bow release reworked with custom contours and scroll engraving. The receiver bridges have been configured to accept Dakota Talley-type scope bases. The 25” tapered round Kriger barrel has twin gold bands at the breech and is fitted with full-band front sight, full-band sling swivel base, and a matted quarter rib with a standing gold-lined express sight with polished pyramid to center the eye -- all of which are fully made “in-house” by Ralf.

Inscriptions include “Martini Gunmakers Canada” inlaid in gold on the barrel and the caliber, “.338 Win. Mag.” gold-inlaid on the rib.

This is Ralf’s American style with classic stock built from highly-figured American Black Walnut with classic comb, a right-hand full-formed cheekpiece with shadowline. Stock features include ebony forend tip, fancy wrap-around borderless checkering in 24 LPI with ribbon and fleur-de-lys carving, an engraved steel pistol grip cap, an inlaid gold oval (vacant), a rear sling swivel stud, and a classic red rubber butt pad. Length of pull is 14 1/8”. For those of us drawn to the classic American custom rifle, this one is the epitome of that style.

Action and barrel are rust blued. Weight is 8 lbs, 15 oz. without scope.  This rifle captures the hallmarks of Martini’s work: the satiny black of the traditional rust blue finish, the flawless function of a classic action, the luster of the stock, and his well-executed wood-to-metal fit, his superb checkering and tasteful minimal engraving.

Scope is a new high-end Swarovski Habicht 3-10x42 A, made in Austria, duplex reticle with five distance lines for range adjustments and fitted in Talley Quick-Detachable rings.

Condition: 99.9% nearly new.

As listed in the Bluebook, go to Martini’s veb site and click on pricing: It shows his basic handmade rifle starting at $19,200 with extras of $2,000 for upgraded wood, $1,000 for Talley mounts with custom bases, and $300 for inlaid vacant gold oval, bringing the total without scope to $ 22,500, but only if, the buyer places an order and waits three years for the work to reach its queue.  Add in the scope and you are easily at $24,000.

Priced here to sell: $17,750, a savings of $6,250 and you don’t have to wait to own this unique and beautiful rifle.

Seller is the author of The Rifleman’s Rifle (Winchester pre-64 Model 70s) and will furnish a Letter of Provenance that this gun is from his collection.  Please check out author’s feedback on ebay under rcrwin70roger.  3-day non-firing inspection for full refund, shipping is $65 to buyer’s FFL, payment by MO, certified check , wire transfer or personal check with wait for validation.

About the gunmaker (excerpts from Shooting Classics Daily, “Making a Martini” by L.D.McCaa):

“Ralf Martini is one of the best in the business with a resume to support it. Born in West Germany, Mr. Martini is a former military sniper turned machinist then turned custom gun maker. Building guns in Canada, he is registered as a Professional Member of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild and has partnered with Master Gunmaker Martin Hagn — inventor of the Hagn Single Shot, one of the finest falling block single shot rifles ever made.

Martini excels as both a metalsmith and a stockmaker — two talents shared by one person less and less these days. In 2009 Ralf created a new stock design for the Heym Express bolt action rifle which was in full production by 2011 under the name “Heym Express by Martini”. Besides his American style, Ralf offers a British style using the same classic lines as the original London “Best” magazine rifles from before the wars. While many gunmakers attempt this, few achieve it with such success.

Mr. Martini is a gunmaker who is clearly familiar with what makes a rifle “shootable.” Nothing too fancy, just a rifle that incorporates simple elegance and perfection in craftsmanship.

His rifles are but a fraction of the cost of what London thinks is its “Best,” and he certainly seems to have a better idea of what a “Best” gun is. No doubt one of the great gunmakers of our times, Mr. Martini’s guns reflects what triggers the “want” in all of us as gun collectors.”
