Of the 1903’s built, RIA had the lesser amount of production. And it took RIA awhile to get going. Because of high demand for a military rifle to replace the Krag, RIA was enlisted to make 1903’s, since Springfield Armory simply could not make enough. Starting in 1904 RIA did not actually get any rifles shipped until 1908. This rifle is barrel dated November 1918. Both with Springfield Armory and RIA many of the early actions were lacking in integrity. Springfield guns under around serial number 900,000 and RIA guns under 285,000 fell into this category. Many of those actions were destroyed but some were “double heat treated” before assembly. This 1903 is one only 10,155 that were documented to have been “double heat treated” at RIA, making this a very collectible and desirable military rifle. Excellent bore. Excellent working order.
