This was on consignment at a local gunshop. This mauser was left to the Veterans grandson who told my friend who works at the shop the story of how his grandfather brought it home. His grandfather didnt want to saw the stock for his duffle bag, so he diassembled the rifle, stuffed the stock down his pant leg and limped home. Everyone assumed he was wounded. He said it was kept in his grandfathers closet and he doesn't believe his grandfather ever shot it. I tried, but the shop owner would not share the name of the vet. Everything matches on the rifle, except the stock and the cocking piece. Appearently, this rifle left Germany the way it is. The condition of the metal is pristine with very sharp stamps. The bore was fairly dark and frosted when I bought it. After running a brush through it a fews times its shined up very nice. I'm guessing the rifles original stock was damaged early in the war and spent much of its time in an arsonal for repairs, thats only a guess though.
