The firm of Charles Osborne (1799-1871) was established in 1838 as a gunmaker at 1 Litchfield Street, Birmingham, England and in 1858 he was appointed as a guardian of the Birmingham Proof House. There is very little info available history for this relatively large firm, though it is known that he supplied firearms to both London and provincial makers. This example has a completely casehardened finish, except the flue finished trigger guard with finely checkered walnut grips with an oval thumb plate. It features double superposed swivel octagon barrels each with a brass bead sight. The barrels rotate to the left, and each is proofed on the side and marked “CHAS OSBORNE” on the top of one and “LONDON” on the top of the other. The frame sides and top are scroll engraved with simple line and zigzag bordering. There is a belt hook attached to the left side of the frame and there is a guard protruding on the lower left side which protects the nipple that is not being used. Pistols of all sorts had by then become a common mode of pocket-sized firepower, though small revolvers were quickly eclipsing the single shot design. This would have likely been intended as a self-defense gun. In a day when the single shot pistol was popular, this over/under pistol would have been a very handy self-defense weapon to have around, having two shots to fire off instead of one! The overall condition is fine. Original case colors. Excellent action. Good bores, smooth and one bore is pitted. Nice floral engravings. Legible markings. The grip is in fine shape with sharp checkering. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 2-3/4 inches. Caliber: .38 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
