Description: *SALE PENDING* Extremely Rare & Unusual Prototype Model 1870 Frank Wesson Medium Frame Pocket Rifle "Mate" Cased with Shoulder Stock & Accs, .22 RF Cal, mfg. circa 1870-1893. This is a very interesting and totally unique Frank Wesson pocket rifle likely made as a prototype, exhibition piece, or for presentation. It has several features which were never available on regular production guns and I have never seen another like it. Most notably the gun is fitted with a forearm which was never offered. The sides of the breech are flat as opposed to the fluted scoop found on standard pocket rifles and is a separate piece mounted flush to the barrel. Normally the barrel and breech would be one piece and entirely blued. A saddle ring is also mounted on the left side of the breech. To add more intrigue the serial number is "1000" and a brass plaque inscribed "Mate" is mounted on the case. The 18" long octagon barrel (including breech) is fitted with a globe front sight and adjustable peep rear which is bright fire blued. The barrel retains 85% original bluing while the frame and breech show 80% nickel finish. The skeleton stock which is numbered to the gun retains nearly all original nickel finish. There is still vibrant case color on all sides of the hammer. Rosewood grips and forearm retain 80% factory varnish and fit flawlessly with no chips or cracks. The forearm features a neatly fluted tip with the rear sculpted into the lines of the frame. Serial number "1000" is stamped on the frame (butt) and stock with no other markings present. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. Manual safety button and sliding cartridge extractor with rebounding firing pin. The bore shows strong rifling front to back with moderate to heavy pitting and blackpowder frosting scattered throughout. The case features a brass handle with latches and remains in very good condition overall aside from a piece missing along one end of the lid. Included within is a wood cleaning rod and several period boxes of collector ammunition as pictured (NOTE - ammo will be shipped separately and buyer must provide proper licensing per your state requirements). A very impressive and totally unique Frank Wesson pocket rifle that will be a highlight among any collection. I'm sure there was a fantastic story behind this one-of-a-kind gun that has been lost to time!
