This is a handsome, adjustable target sight-equipped revolver that has matching numbers on the frame, barrel, cylinder, yoke, and extractor, with the metal retaining 95-97% of the original blue finish that has some mild silvering at the sides of the muzzle, along some of the high edges, and a minor turn-ring on the cylinder. There are some small spots of plum-brown freckling on the left side of the barrel at the "&" in the maker’s mark, and at the rear of the sideplate. The hammer and trigger have much of the original color case-hardening remaining, with some silvering along the edges of the hammer spur and bearing surfaces of the trigger. A "No. 4" was factory engraved on the frame knuckle, and a Patridge front sight is installed. The checkered, diamond-center grips are numbered to the gun on the interior, and are in fine shape with only minor handling marks and mild flattening of the points. The lock-up is tight, the action functions flawlessly. The revolver is accompanied by a 2003-dated S&W factory letter that gives a shipping date of March 8, 1933, to the Somerville, MA, Police Department via an order placed by Iver Johnson Sporting Goods Co. of Boston, MA. The letter confirms the configuration of the revolver and also states that it was one of five revolvers in the shipment that were numbered "1 to 5" by the factory (undoubtedly for a competition team). This is a fine-excellent example of a Police-used Target .38 Hand Ejector, and would make a splendid addition to any collection.
