Description:
Overall, the gun is in excellent condition. It retains an easy 85% original case color and more than 90% of its original plum barrel brown with the wear being in its expected locations, hand wear under the receiver forward of the trigger guard and sides of the barrels above. A true fan of Lefevers will appreciate this gun as having all of the adjustment features of Lefever’s “full compensating action” to include the split underlug with adjustment screw. The action, having the early two “fish-hook” cocking mechanism, is tight and all functions properly. The engraving on this gun, typical of Lefevers, is finely executed (see pictures). Triggers and cocking indicators are gold plated as is the case with most high grade Lefevers. The wood is French walnut with a gold shield forward of the toe. Both the buttstock and forend have been professionally refurbished, many years ago, the reason said to be due to a blemish on the left of the buttstock that was taking away from the stock’s overall beauty. All of Lefever’s high grade guns were pretty much “special order” as many special features were offered at the time. This example has a horn butt-plate and the rarely seen semi-pistol/round grip capped with a horn cap with an ivory insert, neither exhibiting worm holes. The splinter forend features a push button release and steel tip. Both buttstock and forend feature the highest quality checkering with exceptionally fine panels/wings behind the grip.

Collector’s considerations: In addition to condition, rarity

In Robert Elliot’s book “Uncle Dan Lefever – Master Gunmaker” Bob writes: “The production estimate of the very rare “B” grade does not exceed 1,100”. Further, of the total of all sideplate Lefever guns (approximately 58,615), 15% were made in 10ga. If made in equal distribution across the many grades, that would mean the subject “B” Lefever is perhaps one of 165 … not many.

Additional pictures are available upon request.

NOTE: I'm not entirely sure as to where I should be with regard to price range, one just doesn't see a lot of "B" grades to be able to compare. With this I welcome honest and knowledgeable insight into this matter. I am open to reasonable offers.
