Description:
RARE CALIBER AND VERY EARLY NEW SERVICE, .44 RUSSIAN CHAMBERING, 7 1/2" BARREL, #5XXX, MADE 1901. These early production big New Service revolvers in this chambering are extremely rare as the standard calibers were pretty much the same as the most popular in the famed Single Action Army: .45 Colt, .44-40 and .38-40. The .44 Russian cartridge was more of a Smith & Wesson chambering and was standard in some of their popular large frame top break revolvers. The .44 Russian which is basically a shortened version of the later .44 Special introduced by S&W in 1907, was also known for its accuracy and was very popular on the target ranges. Many, if not most, of these .44 Russian chambered Colts were later bored out to accept the longer .44 Special cartridge- this one retains the original shorter .44 Russian chamber. This New Service has the correct last patent date on the barrel top of 1900.  The left side of the barrel is correctly marked "NEW SERVICE .44 RUSSIAN CTG" and the left side of the frame has the early small rampant colt stamping with the round "COLT'S NEW SERVICE" marking around it.  The hammer retains some light case color and the overall revolver retains even thinning blue mixing some plum and brown with brighter blue on the frame and in the protected areas. Grips are fine and the action is tight with the cylinder locking with no play or end shake. the bore is fairly bright with a few small spots of pitting and good rifling all the way through. The front sight has not been filed or altered and the lanyard swivel is intact. Nice appearance overall and an extremely rare 121 year old big bore Colt.
