Production started at Spreewerk Werk Grottau in June 1942, and this example, S/N 3893a, was made approximately March 1943. What is interesting to note on this early "a" block cyq, are two things. The P.38 stamp is 3mm above the slide base, as are the "NLS" guns ("No Letter Suffix"). On later "cyq" a-block serials, the stamp is about 6mm above the slide base. Also, this example does not have what is referred to as "ULG" (Under Left Grip) marking. ULG is usually a two or three digit marking with sometimes an associated letter. Original paint in the "F" and just barely a trace of residual paint in the "S". AEG grips 6 broken lines, Z3 38 in upper circle inside grip panel, P1528 or P1529 with mould number in lower circle. Grips are not chipped or cracked. As a note, the 5 broken line grips from Julius Posselt start to show up in the mid-a block cyq pistols. Pistol has the period correct and desirable e/88 spine maked magazine, left side and right side of magzine are unmarked. The double action mode and hammer drop safety function perfectly. Rear sight blade is tight, front sight has the "long apron" milling around the barrel, this changes to a short milling pattern slightly later in production. No Russian "X", no import marking, not dipped. These early production Spreewerks are not easy to find and this example is in 91-92% original finish condition.
