Description:
General Specs: L.C. Smith, Year 1923, 12 Gauge, 6lb 9oz, Chokes .002/ .023; C/M, LOP 14 5/8", DAH 2 9/16", DAC 1 5/16"
Serial Number: FWE54447

This is a rare find; a Hunter Arms Trap Grade “BRUSH GUN” built in 1923, a purpose built gun meant to be ULTRALIGHT WEIGHT, QUICK TO SHOULDER, WITH OPEN CHOKES FOR CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH FAST FLUSHING BIRDS.  Most of the vintage American doublegun makers produced and catalogued such guns, some even referring to them in their literature as such.  The common features of the early brush guns were 26” barrels choked Cylinder or IC in the right barrel, no more than Modified in the left barrel (almost all shotguns of that era came either M/F or F/F), noticeably lighter weight, and modern stock dimensions.  Many came with recoil pads, as a 6 1/2-pound 12ga. produced notable recoil.  This Hunter Arms produced L.C. Smith Trap Grade, snFWE54447 built in 1923, is one of their brush guns, with 26” barrels factory choked Cylinder/Modified, WEIGHING JUST 6 POUNDS 9 OUNCES.  Shipped with the desirable options of the Hunter One Trigger (a single selective trigger), ejectors, and a Prince of Wales style pistol grip stock.  The Trap Grade was the second level up in L.C. Smith engraving, showing scenes on the left lock plate of a line of trap shooters in the period attire, and a live pigeon shooter on the right lockplate, along with a small amount of scroll work.  Only 2700 Trap Grades were produced in 12ga., about 1800 with ejectors, 955 with the Hunter One Trigger, BUT ONLY 122 WITH THE RARE 26” BARRELS.  As most shooter/collectors of vintage American doubleguns know, most all L.C. Smith 12ga. doubles weigh well over 7lbs. some over 8lbs….not the ideal gun to carry long days over hill and dale!  Very few will be found under 7lbs., and almost never one in the 6 ½ lb. range.  This Elsie is in excellent, “as found” condition, with mirror shiny bores, about 97% blue, 2 ¾” chambers, barrels tight on hinge pin and breech face with top lever well right of center, ejectors strong and timed, and the Hunter One Trigger functioning just as it was designed.  There is about 70% factory original case color on the action, thinning but there, and the screws are excellent as is the engraving.  The buttstock is nicely figured European walnut, measuring a LONG lop of 14 5/8” to the rear position single trigger (would be 15 ½” if there were a front trigger), with 2 9/16” drop at heel, 1 5/16” drop at the nose of comb, and 1/8” cast on FAVORING A LEFT-HANDED SHOOTER (we can bend the stock to suit your dimensions within a few days of purchase).  There are no cracks in the wood, the checkering is excellent, and the wood-to-metal fit is excellent as well.  There was a dent in the right barrel that was professionally raised, but left a “rub” mark where it was worked on.  We can rust blue the barrels to perfection within 2-4 weeks of purchase if you wish to improve the aesthetics.  What a great gun for upland game behind pointing dogs, or for grouse/woodcock in the thick stuff, and fine for busting clays as well. A nice condition, hard to find L.C. Smith Trap Grade with SST, Ejectors, and ultralight weight…priced to sell and very affordable.  See the specs below and study the photographs.  This is a very nice ELSIE.  Thanks for looking!
