Description:
General Specs: Fox/Savage, Year 1939, 12 Gauge, 7lb 1oz, Chokes .020/ .032, LOP 14 3/16", DAH 3 1/8", DAC 1 13/16"
Serial Number: 35018

When the Fox SP Grade was introduced in 1932, the depression was on, and the Savage owned Fox factory needed new business. Just a year before, Winchester introduced the Model 21, a popular shotgun then and now. Fox saw the opportunity to make some cost saving changes in the appearance of the Fox with the new SP Grade.  With its smooth-sided black frame, more rounded stock and action, the gun appeared more an English boxlock and similar to the new Model 21. Internally it was exactly like every other gun Fox produced.  The Fox SP Grade was introduced when production of side x side guns was dwindling, and very few were ever made.  The Fox SP Grade is quite a rare find in the world of Fox guns.  This Fox SP Grade, sn35018, was shipped in 1935 with 28” number 3 weight barrels, FACTORY 2 ¾” CHAMBERS (ABLE TO SHOOT MODERN, READILY AVAILABLE FACTORY AMMUNITION), excellent bores, tight ribs, and 98% blue. The buttstock and forend is fine straight grained walnut with well-spaced mineral streaks, some fiddleback figure, and is free of damage. The forend matches the stock with the same grain pattern continuing forward to an inset ebony wedge, checkering matches on both forend and wrist and is in excellent shape. The pistol grip cap and unique factory buttplate with a rounded spur at the heel are both perfectly fit.  Fox described their new SP frame as "Streamline", when everything from radios to locomotives was designed to be fast and modern looking, streamline was the new venacular, and it is indeed sleek.  Gone are the hard edges, the action is rounded both top and bottom, the breech balls filed to the shape of the barrels like an XE grade, the head of the stock is rounded with no “side panels”...this is a true round bodied Fox. The gun handles like most every Fox, balanced 1/8" forward of the hinge pin and weighing 7lbs 1oz. It has double triggers breaking cleanly at 5.9 and 5.7 lbs respectively.  Included in the photos is a copy of the factory order card and this rare and collectible Fox matches the factory specs precisely and hasn’t been altered from its original configuration over its 87 years of history.  What a great gun, built for an emerging market with modern looks and finishes, it still has everything an upland shooter needs; lightweight, field chokes, superb balance and handling characteristics, and a Fox that will continue to increase in value as you enjoy its use.  If you fancy yourself a FOX COLLECTOR/SHOOTER, YOU REALLY NEED TO HAVE AN SP GRADE IN YOUR COLLECTION.  Don’t miss this opportunity.  Thanks for looking!
